Indoor Air Quality
The University of Maryland is committed to providing a work environment that is free of recognized hazards and investigate concerns which may be related to indoor air quality (IAQ). What affects Indoor Air Quality? Indoor air quality may be affected by deficiencies in the ventilation system, vapors, dust generated in the work environment, materials infiltrating from outside sources (such as pollen or engine exhaust), or mold associated with moisture-affected materials. I have concerns about air quality in my work place. What can I do? If you have concerns regarding IAQ in your work place, contact the Department of Environmental Safety, Sustainability and Risk (ESSR).
ESSR personnel will conduct interviews to collect background information on the issue(s) in the space. Submit a service request for an IAQ investigation on the ESSR website at the following link: www.ESSR.umd.edu/apps/other/service.cfm What is performed during an initial indoor air quality survey? Following the interview, an ESSR staff member will conduct an initial survey. This typically includes the following: • Review of the HVAC system supplying the areas of concern • Real-time measurements for Carbon dioxide, Temperature, and Relative Humidity • A visual inspection for visible mold and/or water-affected materials in accessible areas • Survey for possible source(s) of contaminants What if further investigation is necessary? If further investigation is necessary, it may include the following: • Further HVAC evaluation with FM personnel • Air sampling • Material sampling • SDS product review How are the findings of the indoor air quality survey reported?
ESSR will prepare a written report of survey results, including conclusions/recommendations regarding possible causes of the IAQ problems. Copies of the report will be forwarded to the service requestor and any other associated personnel. When visible mold is observed on building materials, a mold remediation scope of work will be prepared for mold remediation contractors. Remediation will be coordinated with FM personnel.
