Departmental Coordinator

The individual at the University of Maryland System who is responsible for overseeing Asbestos Safety & Health directives throughout all University of Maryland facilities. This individual has the following specific duties:

  1. Attends quarterly asbestos coordinators meetings to keep updated on asbestos program activities,
  2. Determines University of Maryland System policies in conformance with program directives,
  3. Identifies policy issues and liaisons with the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Department of Personnel, as necessary, for clarification or assistance with program-related concerns,
  4. Ensures that all Level I and Level II employees within the University of Maryland System are identified to the Department of Personnel and the Maryland Department of the Environment, and that these employees are provided with appropriate training, medical surveillance and proper equipment,
  5. Determines that Asbestos Program Managers have been appointed to appropriate departmental facilities, and that these managers have a decision-making capacity within their facilities,
  6. Determines that Agency Safety & Health Specialists have been appointed to appropriate facilities and that Safety & Health Committees have been established,
  7. Implements a standardized and accurate recordkeeping system within appropriate facilities for all asbestos-related work and program activities,
  8. Coordinates formulation of budget requests at the University of Maryland System level, and
  9. Prepares reports for the University of Maryland System head and Asbestos Oversight Committee concerning asbestos conditions and funding priorities.
