General Waste

General Waste, Unused, Uncontaminated, Laboratory Waste

Definition:

Any office waste, or general laboratory waste not contaminated with infectious agents, hazardous chemicals or radioactive materials.

Examples:

 

  • Office waste
  • Disposable laboratory plasticware
  • Broken Glass
  • Uncontaminated animal bedding
  • Chemical bottles

 

Follow Biological Waste instructions for disposal of all "sharps" (needles, syringes, razor blades, scalpel blades, etc.)

 


Packaging Guidelines


If Disposing: Then:

Office Waste
  1. Place in waste basket lined with a plastic bag.

Recyclable Office Paper (mixed and white paper, newspaper, corrugated cardboard)
  1. Place in appropriately labeled containers in your building. Recyclable paper is commingled into one container and emptied daily.
  2. Call 57533 for a special pick-up.

Miscellaneous Recyclable items (glass, plastic, aluminum cans)
  1. Place in appropriately labeled containers in your building. Miscellaneous recyclable items are commingled into one container and emptied daily.
  2. Call 57533 for a special pick-up.

General Laboratory Glassware and Broken Glass (glass pipets)
  1. Place in a sturdy closable cardboard box for disposal.
  2. Dispose in building dumpster.

Uncontaminated Animal Bedding
  1. Place bedding in an opaque plastic bag with no visible "biohazard" markings. Do NOT exceed 35 pounds for each bag.
  2. Seal bag with tape.
  3. Dispose in building dumpster.

Empty Chemical Bottles & Containers*
  1. Deface all chemical identification markings on the empty chemical bottles or containers.
  2. Dispose in building dumpster.
* Some chemical bottles & containers must be triple-rinsed before disposal.
The rinsate must be collected and disposed of via ESSR. Call ESSR for guidance.
